How to Make a Twitter Webcam Security System!

January 3rd, 2010

webcam-hack

It’s going to be an exciting year as Twitter hacks such as this one appears.  It’s a laser-tripped webcam that actually can tweet the photo taken to Twitter.  I think this could serve as a great security device on the cheap.

It requires a bit of hacking though, looks like an Arduino, Linux, and bunch of programming, not for the faint-hearted indeed.

This instructable will show you how to construct a laser tripwire that can twitter and grab an image from a webcam, as well as execute any command you can put in a bash script.
This instructable is actually quite simple and is even suitable as a beginner arduino project. It requires a GNU/linux (or possibly Mac) operating system with the arduino IDE and Processing IDE working properly. This project could also be implemented in Windows if you created a more complex processing application.

Twitter Hack – How to Tweet Your Palm Pre’s GPS Location!

September 11th, 2009

Here’s a really fun Twitter hack that shows you how to “tweet” your Palm Pre’s GPS location to your Twitter account.  This could be a great way to track your Pre’s whereabouts as you can also optionally set your Twitter account to “protected” so only you see the GPS updates.

(Screenshot of @trackmypalmpre, which gets updated with location of my Palm Pre every hour.)

As promised on my last blog post on how to set up Google GPS tracking on your Palm Pre, I will now show you how to “tweet’ your GPS location to a Twitter account so you can track it on Twitter too.

This might be a great way to keep “track” of where your Palm Pre has been.  You could probably even make a GoogleMaps using the Twitter RSS feed to show exactly where your Palm Pre has been traveling in the past.

Twitter Hack – Home Automation Using Twitter Status Updates!

July 20th, 2009

Here’s an incredibly fun way to devise up home automation using Twitter Status updates as commands for remote-control of your home appliances.  This is a really cool project (as any other Twitter hacks) as it makes use of your actual @reply messages to control your home.

With http://twitter.com/MattsOffice you can send a command by placing a keyword in a @reply message. Valid keywords are “light”, “bright”, “dark”, “temp”, “hot”, “cold”, “lcd”, and “view”. For example, to retrieve the temperature of my office I just need to update my Twitter status with a simple question like “@MattsOffice What is the temperature?”

Hackers Send Out Fake Death Tweets!

June 30th, 2009

Hackers have been sending out fake death tweets of famous people like Britney Spears.  Although the matter has been revolved already, (what seems to be caused by TwitPic) it’s interesting to note that Twitter has the power to spread false rumors as much as real ones.

Twitpic fixed this vulnerability by Monday and in an apology letter explained that the hackers tried every PIN combination possible until one worked. Now, Twitpic says a “fix has been put in place to prevent this from happening,” and that less than 10 users were affected by the hack and “no account information was compromised.”

Twitter Hack – How to Get Rid of Inactive Followers!

April 27th, 2009

Using Twitter-friends.com, you can easily find out which of your followers “never” use Twitter.   You can unfollow those inactive followers and it makes sense, they are probably not twittering all that much anyways.  Simply log-in to Twitter-friends.com and click on “Inactive” tab to see which of your followers are the most inactive.

My goal was to unfollow anybody who hadn’t updated in x days. I decided that 30 days was a reasonable number. If you haven’t updated in a month, chances are that account has been abandoned, or you’ve been forced to leave Twitter for other reasons.

I also felt this period covered me for folk who were on holiday, moving home, or away from Twitter for some reason beyond their control but would return in the future.

Twitter Hack – Brain Twitter Interface for Locked-in Syndrome or a Spinal Cord Injury

April 25th, 2009

WOW!  Twitter can now officially be twitted using your brain!  NitroLab of University of Wisconsin has figured out a way to write tweets using the human brain waves.  The whole process is rather cumbersome but it’s a viable solution for those with Locked-in syndrome or a spinal cord injury to communicate online with the world.

The 140 characters of Twitter really allows this device to be the perfect interface as writing a letter can take a second or two as seen in the video.

Long Term Twitter Trend Tracking – Twopular!

April 25th, 2009

Twopular is another cool Twitter Trend tracking site that let’s you see which terms have been popular on Twitter in the last 2 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, week, month, and total-ever.  I find Twopular very helpful in analyzing what has happened in the past.  For example, in the last 30 days, we can see that Easter, Earth Hour, and Oprah were pretty darn popular.

Twopular started as a pure “let’s surf a bit on the twitter wave” project. And actually, this status hasn’t really changed yet and I am still not sure what’s the real use of it. Maybe its all about amusing people by listing them as top trendsetter – not too bad. In any case for now I will keep the elephant running, hope he makes some friends out there and he will let me know one day where he wants to go.

Twitter Trend Tracking – Twist

April 25th, 2009

Twist is another great app for tracking Twitter trends via friendly graphs that will sorta tell you when Twitters are twittering about a certain topic the most during a period of 7 days or 30 days.

I personally found that Twist is great for tracking “major” Twitter trends, it’s not too helpful if you run a small-business or you need detailed graphs on your niche brand.

This is a great way to predict which Twitter trends will become popular in the next week so I think it will be very useful especially on holidays when people might tend to buy stuff for their loved ones. (Internet Marketing tip)

Google Employee Dustian Diaz Moves to Twitter!

April 25th, 2009

Perhaps the rumors that Twitter is the next Google and will replace e-mail in year 2015 isn’t too far off as more and more Google employees are moving to Twitter.

Ded, or Dustin Diaz, is another such Google employee who has defected himself to Twitter and twitted this:

ded

I think it’s too early to tell if Twitter will be the next Google or not but certainly if Twitter keeps employee-napping Googlers, Twitter just might become the next Google.

According to Googlers:

“It’s kind of shocking we couldn’t keep him,” another Googler tells us, calling Diaz “one of the best frontend developers around.” But of course, Twitter is the hot new company, just like Facebook was months back when it was stealing employees left and right from larger companies — like Google.
